PFAS in pet products: what the stain-resistant finish is really doing
Almost every dog bed sold as stain-resistant, waterproof or easy-clean owes that property to a fluorinated finish. Here is what that finish is, why it does not wash out, and what to buy instead.

What PFAS are
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a family of several thousand synthetic chemicals built around a carbon-fluorine bond, the strongest single bond in organic chemistry. That bond is precisely the point: it repels water, oil and dirt, which is why the family became the default finish for outdoor fabrics, non-stick pans, food packaging and, quietly, pet textiles.
The same bond is why they are called forever chemicals. Nothing in a washing machine, a garden or a body breaks them down at any meaningful rate. They leave a product by shedding — into dust, onto skin, into water — rather than by degrading.
Where they hide in a pet product
Read the marketing copy, not the materials list. Stain-resistant, water-repellent, easy-clean, spill-proof, anti-microbial and odour-resistant are all claims that a fabric was given a chemical finish it did not have when it was woven. On dog beds this is usually a coated polyester shell or a laminated waterproof liner under the cover. On coats it is a durable water repellent sprayed on the face fabric. On blankets and mats it is a topical treatment applied at the last stage of finishing.
The finish is not printed on the label because it is a process, not a component. A bed can be honestly described as 100% polyester and still carry a fluorinated coating.
Why it matters more for a dog than for you
A dog spends twelve to sixteen hours a day in contact with its bed, face down, mouth open, often chewing the edge. Dogs groom by licking. They live at floor level where treated-textile dust settles, and they have a fraction of your body weight to dilute what they take in.
Veterinary and environmental studies have repeatedly found PFAS in the blood of household dogs and cats at levels comparable to or higher than the people they live with, with household dust and consumer textiles among the routes considered. The evidence is not a single dramatic finding; it is the steady accumulation of one.
How to buy without them
Prefer fibres that do the job by structure rather than by coating. Wool sheds water at the surface, resists odour because it manages moisture rather than trapping it, and is naturally flame-resistant, so it needs no retardant either. Waxed cotton repels rain because of the wax, which is a visible, renewable, re-applicable finish rather than an invisible permanent one.
Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which tests finished textiles against limits set for baby products and includes PFAS among the restricted substances. Ask makers directly whether a DWR finish has been applied, and treat a vague answer as a yes.
Be suspicious of the word waterproof on anything a pet sleeps in. A bed does not need to be waterproof. It needs to be washable.
What we do
Every textile in the atelier meets OEKO-TEX Standard 100. There is no PFAS-based DWR on any coat we sell — our trench coats repel rain through waxed cotton, which you can refresh with a wax bar rather than replace. There is no plastic filling, no laminated liner and no anti-microbial treatment in any bed, because wool does not need one.
Questions
- Do PFAS wash out of a dog bed?
- No. The carbon-fluorine bond that makes the finish work is what makes it persistent. Washing removes some of the loose surface residue into the wastewater but does not break the chemistry down, and the treated fabric continues to shed for the life of the product.
- Is waxed cotton a PFAS finish?
- No. Waxed cotton repels water with a paraffin or beeswax blend sitting on the surface of a natural fibre. It is visible, it wears off, and you re-apply it — the opposite of a permanent fluorinated coating.
- How can I tell if a product I already own is treated?
- If it was sold as stain-resistant, waterproof, easy-clean or odour-resistant and it is made of synthetic fabric, assume it is treated unless the maker states otherwise. Certification marks such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or bluesign are the practical way to confirm the absence.
